CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
Al slept with me that night. I donât know if I was anthropomorphizing (I think thatâs the word when you give human characteristics to a dog), but Iâm guessing he didnât want to be around Rusakov or at least around his new friends while they were upset. Maybe he just wanted a night off from the girls to rebond with his master.
The next morning I walked to the main building to get some coffee, and at the bar I found TC already up, reading the paper, drinking coffee and fully engaged with the bartender. Elizabeth was a twenty-something redheaded cutie with a Slavic accent who was wearing very tight black jeans and a sleeveless turtleneck.
I asked her for a coffee and traded âgood morningsâ with TC.
âElizabeth here is studying to be a hairdresser and she used to be a gymnast,â TC said to me but really to let Elizabeth know he had been listening. TC was still working on good lines to use on the Appaloosa women.
âAny sign of Jerry?â I said.
âNo, not yet. But heâll be alright,â TC said.
âAny sign of the others?â
âThey like to sleep in, and yesterday was a long day. Iâm guessing theyâll be down in a bit.â
I grabbed my coffee and headed back to the house. As I was leaving I overheard TC tell Elizabeth that he liked the way her red hair brought out the black in her shirt. There was no question the man had all the lines; I just thought it was way too early to be trying to figure out what they all meant.
When I got back to my room Angelina was there making my bed. Al was following every step she took, almost tripping her up he was so close. I watched from the doorway and smiled at how she sang softly to Al and talked to him like a mom would talk to a child. She didnât scold him out of frustration or anything, she just playfully told him what to do. Of course, all that was an assumption because she was speaking to him in Spanish.
âYouâve taught Al Spanish already?â I said.
She was startled and put her hand to her chest. She looked a lot less comfortable now that she saw me.
âIâm sorry. I am working slow today,â she said.
She looked even more beautiful than yesterday. Her hair was pulled back in a bun and it emphasized her almond eyes and her mocha skin.
The TV was still on from last night. I like to sleep with the noise as background. The local NBC affiliate was doing the morning news. They were showing a photo of a Mexican couple. I turned it up.
âAnother itinerant Mexican killing overnight, this time a man and woman waiting for day work in the north part of Las Vegas. They were found dead, each with a single bullet hole to the forehead,â the male anchor said.
Angelina stopped and stared at the TV.
